German Recipes – The “Wiener Schnitzel” And The Cousins

The “Wiener Schnitzel” is one of the easiest meals to prepare. Originally made with veal you can use a pork cutlet. Pound it thin to tenderize it, dip it in egg and breadcrumbs and fry it. Serve with a half lemon to be sprinkled over it. That is it!

Hard to find something that good that is that easy to make. But did you know there are a few cousins of the Wiener Schnitzel? You prepare it all the same way.

Fresh or canned mushroom sauted with some diced onions on top make a “Hunters Schnitzel”.

Sliced paprika sauted on top makes a “Gypsy Schnitzel”. You could combine the paprika and the mushrooms – no idea what it would be called.

Replace the paprika with peppers – not too hot – of any or mixed colors and you get a “Mexican Schnitzel”.

Place a sunny side up egg – not fried to hard – on top of the Wiener and it turns into a “Schnitzel Holstein”.

Saute some soy sprouts with soy sauce and put it on top of the Wiener and lets call it a “Thai Schnitzel”.

That is what I like about German recipes – you can modify them real easy.

Most people think “Brats” or “Wiener Schnitzel” when they refer to German recipes. Funny enough Wien is the capital of Austria.

But then, at some point and time Germany pretty much reached from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. And all this cultures found their way into German cooking.

And over the last few decades there have been strong influences from France, Italy and Greece. German recipes always have picked up from other cultures.

But one thing has not changed much – German recipes are fairly simple. This is one of the advantages because you can easily modify them and create very different meals based on one recipe.

Most German recipes are pretty much straight forward and fairly simple. The famous “Wiener Schnitzel” is probably one of the easiest meals around.

But it also has a few second degree cousins like the “Hunter”, the “Gypsy” or the “Holstein”. Slight variations create different meals.

And that is the beauty of most German recipes. Because they are simple you can easily modify them and create lots of different meals.

Hydrogen Peroxide – What It Is And What It Does

Hydrogen peroxide – H2O2 – is a weak acid, has strong oxidizing properties and is a bleach agent. This really does not sound to impressive.

But the “oxidizing properties” are what counts here. Hydrogen peroxide very easily gives up one oxygen – which then results in water – H2O.

The very important part is that most “bad things” like bacteria and even cancer cells are anaerobic. This means they cannot survive in an environment with high oxygen levels. Hydrogen peroxide can do just that – raise oxygen levels.

Every wondered why a good rain does more to your garden than all your watering? Rain water has high levels of hydrogen peroxide. It enhances growth.
